Occupational Safety and Health

The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health

IOSH is the UK’s leading professional health and safety body . "Corporate membership” of the Institute (MIOSH) is achieved through academic qualification and experience and is increasingly used by employers as a standard for recruitment.

IOSH also offers training for Health and Safety practitioners as well as non-safety specialists and acts as a focal point for professional practitioners from a diverse range of backgrounds.

At a lower level the National Examining Body in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) supports a “Certificate” qualification that introduces the basics of occupational safety.

Occupational Hygiene

British Occupational Hygiene Society

The aim of the Society is to promote the science of occupational hygiene by raising awareness of the value of the speciality through education, information exchange, research and professional networking.

The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health

CIEH

The CIEH is a professional and educational body, dedicated to the promotion of environmental health and to encouraging the highest possible standards in the training and the work of environmental health professionals.

One of its principal aims is to offer qualifications at various levels in food hygiene, health and safety, environmental protection and training skills. They represent widely accepted standards in industry, assisting organisations to operate safely and effectively as well as to meet the requirements of legislation.

Chartered Accountants

Turnbull report on Corporate Governance

The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales has published guidance on the implementation of the internal control requirements of the Combined Code on Corporate Governance. The guidance Internal Control: Guidance for Directors on the Combined Code has the support and endorsement of the Stock Exchange.

"A company’s system of internal control has a key role in the management of risks that are significant to the fulfilment of its business objectives' " the document states.

The guidance indicates the company's internal control system should:

  • Be embedded within its operations and not be treated as a separate exercise
  • Be able to respond to changing risks within and outside the company
  • Enable each company to apply it in an appropriate manner related to its key risks.

The guidance requires companies to identify, evaluate and manage their significant risks and to assess the effectiveness of the related internal control system. Boards of directors are called on to review regularly reports on the effectiveness of the system of internal control in managing key risks, and to undertake an annual assessment for the purpose of making their statements on internal control in the annual report.

The Emergency Planning Society is the UK's professional body for all those with an involvement with any form of crisis, emergency or disaster planning and management.
The society focus on training, professional development data and information networking and links.

Guidance on the website is regularly updated and covers for example contingency planning in the event of a postal dispute. There are a number of publications available including:
