Asbestos

Asbestos Manager

This site has been set up by a company called Particle Analysis Ltd as a tool to raise the awareness of property managers and others about the problems associated with asbestos and how risks might be assessed. The site is divided into four sections:

  • About asbestos
    This has some excellent information about asbestos generally and about the risks it presents. The section also covers health risk, legal implications,costs associated with asbestos and insurance
  • Interactive assessment
    Through this link an interactive on line risk calculator can be activated. This is a useful training aid with pictures to help identify what asbestos is typically be used for and what it might look like. The type of asbestos, its location condition, containment and liklihood to be disturbed are all used to calculate risk

    This provides details of what the company has to offer and how it may be contacted.

Air Sampling

SKC

SKC is a manufacturer and supplier of air sampling products for industrial hygiene, safety, occupational health, environmental and indoor air quality. The range of products include:

BackCare is a UK Charity which helps people manage and prevent back pain by providing advice, promoting self help, encouraging debate and funding scientific research into better back care. BackCare's self management programme, called "Think-Back", has helped many people with long term back pain.

The website povides details about back care, facts, information sheets, tips and execises for your back and specialist resources.

COSHH Essentials

This site leads to an electronic version of COSHH Essentials: easy steps to control chemicals that was introduced by the HSE in 1999. The guidance leads readers through a simple generic risk assessment, to practical easy to understand guidance on the control systems they need. It also covers 60 guidance sheets covering common tasks such as mixing, weighing and surface coating etc.

Links for chemists

This is hosted and managed by Liverpool University. It has links to over 7,500 chemistry resources on the internet. Of particular interest are the sections on "Chemical literature and publishing", and "Chemicals information". links are provided to pages detailing databases, fundamental constraints, information services, libraries, mailing lists and newsgroups. A safety softwear is also available and covers software houses, databases, education and training. The software listed also covers specific areas such as evaluating hazard effectsof inorganic compounds, process hazards analysis, job safety analysis and assessing toxicity.

ChemWeb

ChemWeb.com was launched in April 1997. It is now the largest online chemical community in the world. ChemWeb.com is a unique resource which combines a huge range of information for those in research chemistry, the chemicals industries and related disciplines. Membership is completely free.

Patient UK is a directory of information sources for health, disease and illness. Links are provided to to news and resources. NHS information equipment and product suppliers, legal services and books. There is also a vast A - Z range of information on illnesses and diseases with links to key UK websites. Information typically includes details of what the disease is how it is contracted, symtoms, treatment and links to advisory bodies and providers of services or products

National Radiation Protection Board (NRPB)

The NRPB is a statutory body set up under the Radiation Protection Act. Their remit is to advance the acquisition of knowledge and protect persons from radiation hazards. They also give information and advice to those in the UK who have responsibility to provide protection from radiation hazards. They also provide technical services which they charge for. This includes:

The site provides guidance on a range of radiation hazards such as the medical use of radiation, epidemiology, radon and ultraviolet radiation and details of their publications including those for non-specialists.

Skin care

Skin care campaign

The Skin Care Campaign (SCC) is an umbrella organisation representing the interests of all people with skin diseases in the UK. Established in 1992, it is a subsidiary of the National Eczema Society, a registered charity.

The site reflects the organisations objectives which is to offer advice and support to those suffering skin problems from health professionals' organisations including the British Association of Dermatologists, the British Dermatological Nursing Group (BDNG), the Primary Care Dermatology Society and the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain.

It includes a directory of skin diseases and the symptom and treatment of skin conditions.
